With some ingenious cutting and piecing, Masons adapts their "Scroll" pattern to their pedestal fruit stand. Masons Scroll is a finely scaled pattern featuring an unfurled scroll on a fine gray net field. The scroll features a scene of a seated person of esteem surrounded by attendants in a garden setting. This scene always includes a small table next to the seated figure and a tall stand in the background. The ends of the scroll remain rolled up as if to indicate this is one scene from a story. Floral sprays surround the scroll as well as reserves of "oriental treasures" above and below the scroll. Enamel transfer highlights include ochre, pink, green and slate blue.

In this instance, Masons seems to have cropped the transfer from a small platter to decorate the top of their fruit stand. The printed oval area leaves each end white, providing gentle contrast for the gilt-tipped molded detail at each end. Masons repeats the scene on the underside of the stand with additional cut prints decorating each end and even the tiny curled sections of the edge toward the middle. Additional molded detail around the stem and foot is left very simple with only a touch of gilt to finish the piece.

Seldom have we seen a combination of pattern and shape as interesting (and successful) as this. As we look at this stand, we are witnessing the 1820's transition from Neoclassicism to the excesses of Victorian design. That oak and acanthus leaf, beaded, double pedestal shape had its counterparts in silver and other ceramics, all caught up in the same transition. Whether by luck or design, Masons combined this unrest with the timeless chinoiserie detail of their "Scroll" pattern. What could be more charming or dignified? What could have been more fine?
