This attractively shaped sauce tureen stand celebrates the English country house in its most bucolic guise, crowning a meadow that is dotted with peacefully grazing sheep. Specifically, it is a view of Cokethorpe Park, an Oxfordshire house that reached the form portrayed here early in the eighteenth century. 

The border-- a tangle of florals, clusters of grapes, leaves and tendrils over a fine pebbled ground--identifies the tray as part of the "Grapevine Border" Series, Enoch wood and Son's extensive pattern featuring a variety of English scenes.

According to A.W. Coysh and R.K. Henrywood  in The Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery: 1780-1880 (Vol.I, p.161-162), the source for many of Wood's "Grapevine Border Series" is John Preston Neale's work, Views of the Seats of Noblemen and Gentlemen in England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland.  The source print for the Cokethorpe Park tray is found in the third volume.
