This vase combines a pattern that is typically Masons with a shape that is quite atypical. The "Japan Fence" pattern is present here in a strongly rendered version with vividly contrasting enamels applied over well controlled patches of cobalt blue. The bright orange central blossom floats above a clearly defined fence motif bordering a pool of deep azure. Above, more blossoms and tendrils float over the white ground; below orange and cobalt sprigs float above the base. A narrow band of gilding--not the lustre Masons sometimes used to give the impression of  gilding-- circles the opening.

The shape is one we have not previously encountered. The elongated proportions differ from other paneled shapes found in Masons. we can add to the unusual height curious raised rectangles on every other panel that echo the panel's shape and fit tightly within the panel's border. These molded details play no part in the layout of the "Fence" pattern; in fact the enamel decoration continues as if they were not present.

Given the unexpected shape, one might venture an attribution to some potter contemporary to the Masons and obviously strongly influenced by them. To do so, however, one must overlook the standard Masons pattern, the placement of the pattern's elements in the way it was typically applied to vases, and the weight and "feel" of the glaze and body that is consistent with Mason's wares. We have considered the issue and tend to think it is simply a seldom used blank.
