This distinguished earthenware creamer stylistically looks in two directions. The shape is derived from neoclassical silver shapes. The scene presented, however, is clearly romantic in feeling with its rural setting, rustic ruins and depiction of common men enjoying nature--or at least trying to catch a few fish for dinner.

What is most striking, however, is the yellow ground glaze, sometimes called "canary." As typical with these wares, the transfer printing is in black, providing the maximum contrast. A simple black stripe provides an effective border finish.

Collectors have traditionally associated these yellow glazed, "canary" wares with the output of the French Creil potteries.  However, scholarship has enlarged this attribution to include wares made in the British regions of  Sunderland and Staffordshire as well.
