Sentimental, old fashioned "love" must have been in the air as Wedgwood was putting these elaborately shaped crimson jasper dip boxes into production--clearly intended for a lady's dressing table.  The contoured profile and domed lid would seem to have run counter to the taste for more simple forms of the early twentieth century.

The sentimental quality carries into the choice of relief groups; three of the five feature cupid and companions.

Especially prized among Wedgwood collectors due to its rarity, Crimson is possibly the most sought after of Wedgwood jasper colors.  Reliefs aside, the rich wine color ground adds extra attraction to any piece.  Surely, even if its difficult, limited production had not made crimson jasper a rarity, it would have demanded special status based simply on its sensuous beauty. 

We always warn novice collectors of possible confusion with Wedgwood's recently produced "wine" color jasper; the more purplish wine occurs as solid jasper, while crimson is always jasper dip.
