"Adelaide's  Bower" presents a garden fantasy with a Chinese flavor. An impossibly elaborate pavilion, set in a lush park, dwarfs in scale the nearby attendants in Asian garb. Luscious blossoms continue the monumental scale. Looking toward the horizon, we note a second fanciful pavilion, distant village, and mountains.  

Reserves of garden scenery alternating with floral bedecked scale devices create a complimentary border filling the flange and spilling down into the well of the plate, almost to the center scene. A solid brown field toward the edge provides contrast.

We know very little about the background of the "Adelaide's Bower" pattern.  One immediately thinks of Queen Adelaide, consort of King William IV and aunt of Queen Victoria.  Indeed, the Leicestershire County Council's website tells of an 1840 visit by the 48 year old widowed Queen Dowager to a site known as Bardon Hill, famous for its views of the countryside. Adelaide, in the company of her sister, the Duchess of Saxe-Weimar and other British luminaries ascended the summit to enjoy the view and take a small meal. The spot afterward was known as "Adelaide's Bower."
