The thoughts  both sentimental and elegant must have been uppermost in the minds of the Wedgwood designers when these elaborately contoured, domed lidded boxes were offered, obviously destined for a lady's dressing table.

The low oval box, with a profile articulated to suggest a turtle back, is adorned with sprig groups appropriate to its elegant and frivolous function, frolicking cupids and a couple more heroic subjects, bound together within a laurel border. 

We often think of Wedgwood's dark olive jasper and their crimson jasper in complimentary terms.   Wedgwood developed these deep jasper tones around the same time -- the last decade of the nineteenth century through the first decade of the twentieth.  They presented similar technical challenges with strong colors which bled through the white spriging, creating a harmonious ivory tone on dark olive pieces and a less  fortuitous pink on the crimson.  Given these challenges, it is not surprising that quantities in both colors are limited, which makes the pairing of a crimson and a dark olive box of the same form--both currently listed on this website--an unusual opportunity.
