Great trees of huge orange blossoms and lilacs sprout from just beyond a fenced enclosure enameled in aqua green in the lower right quadrant of this plate. The unusual lilac florals are clusters of light cobalt circles with deep red enamel highlighting. Cobalt branches and leaves run riot over the other three quadrants of the plate. The cobalt leaves and some of the larger blossoms are also higlighted with gilt. Additional details painted in by hand include little sprigs and leaves executed in two colors of green. The deep red used with the lilacs is repeated in additional sprigs and buds as well as the fretwork panels of the fence.

While we have seen a small cluster of this pattern in the last two years, we find no listings or illustrations of it in our Masons or Stone China references. In our experience this probably indicates that a large service has been dispersed into the marketplace. Once redistributed, examples may for most practical purposes again disappear. Variants of the design without the lilac bunches are a bit more typical.
