A solitary wanderer--his pack bundle dangling from a stick over his shoulder--traverses a Hudson Valley landscape.We see the river behind him, and in the background mountains rise. While natural features dominate the scene signs of  settlement appear as well--two simple houses and a pioneer's rail fence. The view combines two sources of pride for early Americans: the beauty of the land and progress of domestication.

Finishing the brown transfer scene is the signature border of Clew's "Picturesque Views" series: flowers and scrolls punctuated by an easily recognized motif, a long-tailed bird perched on a bit of fretwork. 

Examples of this view are illustrated and identified in Jeffrey B. Snyder's  Historical Staffordshire, American Patriots & Views (p. 53).  Ellouise Baker Larsen in American Historical Views on Staffordshire China also lists the view in her section "Picturesque Views By Clews, 1829-1936" (p.70, Dover Edition).  Larsen notes that the scene is from a painting by William Guy Wall executed around 1820 and included by Henry I. Megarey in his Hudson River Port Folio.
