The effect of Wedgwood's potentially stark teapot shape--octagonal in cross section with assertive handle and spout--is softened and enhanced by an elaborate Neoclassical decorative scheme that plays ovals against the angles. The oval framed reliefs of Apollo and the muse Terpsichore are echoed in the graceful oval of the lid, itself framed with an oval border based on palmettes. Half oval borders of laurel crown the god and muse. An intricate frieze of interlocking half-ovals accents the base. Adding yet another element, vertical garlands of symbolic objects occupy four walls of the octagon flanking the central deities.
The overall inspiration for the pot and its relief elements can be found in the elegant silver tea wares of the period--providing an alternative to the curved shapes of Chinese wares that influenced so many other European designs.
