Wedgwood broadcasts the pithy wisdom of Mr. Punch on this medium size rope handle "Napier" shape milk jug. Polychrome decoration on one side shows Mr. Punch offering a peep show of sorts to the public. (Note his little dog Toby at his feet.) On the reverse he is mounted in triumph, crowned with laurel, atop a hobby horse. The transfer is executed in a soft brown with polychrome highlights on a soft cream color body.

According to Maureen Batkin in WEDGWOOD CERAMICS 1846-1959, A New Appraisal, (Plate 224, Page 104), the Punch designs were registered in 1878 and include the "Napier" jug as shown above, a beer set, a cruet set and a tea set. All feature images of Mr. Punch, himself the image of British public opinion, derived (if not taken directly) from Punch, the renown British satirical magazine.
