This blue printed, soft paste reticulated basket was originally part of a Worcester dessert service. The central transfer decoration in the bottom of the basket is commonly referred to as Worcester's "Pine Cone" pattern. This pattern always features a spray including two pine cones, a central peony and a pomegranate. A combination of printed and brush-applied cobalt elements decorates the sides around the center spray. Worcester finishes the exterior with applied molded florets, highlighted in blue.

The reticulated ceramic basket is one of those cases in which we can discover the use of a tableware form by seeking our early still life paintings. Such paintings--the works of James and Raphaelle Peale come to mind--frequently feature these pieces piled high with fruit. The air circulation permitted by the side wall openings would help to prolong the freshness of the fruit.
