In the "Cologne" pattern a simple romantic landscape is given depth and interest by the variety of printed tones defining foreground trees, midground villa, and background mountains. The finesse of the engraved transfer is only enhanced when printed in black, achieving maximum contrast with the white clay body. Two narrow inner borders are surrounded by an elaborate wide border featuring floral reserves.

Stevenson's "Cologne" can easily be identified by a unique design element in the wide outer border. The floral reserves framed in scrollwork alternate with a row of curious vertical devices, which--upon close observation--turn out to be stylized peacock feathers. Spot this detail and you have found a piece of "Cologne."
