This small jug offers us a twist on the popular Masons "Lotus" pattern, a twist of about ninety degrees! The bold lotus blossom and pad that typically dominate both sides of these jugs here appears only once--under the nose. The jug displays, as a result, with the green and red serpent handle to the rear. Streams of foliage and cobalt details wrap around the sides of the jug. Collar and border are treated in the conventional manner.

While probably not unique, this variation on "Lotus"--the only example we recall--must be considered rare. When displayed with other "Hydra" shape jugs, this little fellow seems to turn to you and stare you in the face!
