Mason's "Mogul" features an eastern potentate and attendants in exotic garden setting, complete with oriental table and urn and distant temple. The density of details is especially intriguing when scaled down to fit this small platter.

Printed in blue, the scene and its floral border are fully colored in applied enamels of slate blue, orange, ochre, pinks and greens. Despite the variety of tones, a light touch is maintained, and the effect is bright and cheerful.

Mason's "Mogul" is typical of the first generation of Mason's patterns in its relatively light-weight, finely potted body coupled with an intricately detailed Chinoiserie study, highlighted with multiple enamel tones. Comparable patterns include "Mandarin," the "Conversation" (or "Sacrificial Lamb") pattern and--most especially--"Scroll," the figures in which are scaled similarly to those in "Mogul." All reflect an imaginative romance with the exotic East.
