Against a stark white ground, a colorful fish--perhaps a carp--swims along side flowing water weeds. Above hovers a simply drawn spider. Only the placement of the images violate the abstract quality to suggest a vignette of pond life. Colored enamels complete the transfer printed outlines, achieving an especially brilliant effect in the shimmering fish.

Following the success of his "Naturalist" service, designer W. S. Coleman limited himself to underwater life in his "Aquarium" pattern. Unlike "Naturalist," the random quality of the printed decorative elements is abandoned to create a single, more cohesive, scene on each plate. Coleman overlaps transfers to achieve underwater effects.

One must also take note of the backstamp, one of the most original and whimsical British ceramic logos.
