A simple egg shape creamer is given unforgettable distinction with a handle fashioned after the head and cap of the traditional Punch character of Punch and Judy fame. The smooth unadorned cobalt surface provides contrast without distractions resulting in a relatively restrained design for majolica. The only other ornaments are dual feather quills surrounding the rim--perhaps a nod to Punch's literary/theatrical origins.

While Wedgwood featured a series of transfer decorated earthenwares in the 1870's and 80's inspired by the satirical comics of Punch magazine, the majolica designs seem to derive directly from the traditional theatrical characters and to be purely decorative--not political--in nature.

The creamer design relates to matching teapot and sugar bowl as well as a more elaborate punch bowl (pun probably intended).
