The "Scottish Minstrel" pattern combines brown and yellow transfer with an additional yellow wash highlighting the scenic elements.  The scene features a rustic couple standing in a garden outside an Italianate villa.  A river runs through the background creating a sense of distance with mountains and additional structures. 

The border pattern is built around a delicate yellow printed ground pattern framed with brown transfer  -- a cell pattern at the outer edge and a pattern of  c-scrolls and medallions around the inner edge.   Brown transfer floral sprigs are cradled in each of the c-scrolls surrounding the scenic views on both saucer and cup. 

We have tried, but cannot find a particularly Scottish element in this pattern. Could it could refer to some wildly popular theatrical piece of the day -- now largely forgotten?  Then again, some yet unknown Staffordshire potter might have been simply trying to profit from the popularity of Sir Walter Scott at the time--a sort of indirect celebrity endorsement.
