The distinctive element of Dimmock's "Vignette" pattern is its double border with reverse floral effects. A printed light brown ground with white flowers and foliage creates a jacquard-like effect. An inner border provides contrasts with its dark brown on white printed nosegays. This complex border frames a scene in which wanderers contemplate elaborate gothic ruins in a romantic mode that brings to mind Wordsworth at Tintern Abbey.

Dimmock was in the ceramics business, both alone and in partnerships from 1826 through 1859. We date the platter 1840-1860 based on the style of the pattern and ironstone weight blank.
