Multiple brown tones lend an energy to the almost baroque composition of gondolas plying the canal waters guided by their gondoliers. Lofty architecture in the background enhances a sense of Italian grandeur. The border around the flange of the plate combines bold florals, reserves of (imaginary?) classical statues, and flourishes suggestive of heraldic motifs.

This dinner plate is one of the best examples of "Gondola" we can remember. The multiple brown values take the pattern into the realm of fine engravings ---- high praise for tableware.
