The pattern of this little purple transfer cup plate is derived totally from the transfer print for the border of the "Texian Campaigne" pattern. The battle scenes that form the center of larger plates are absent here.

As collectors well know, the way to distinguish "Texian" from the very similar "Napoleon" pattern (C. & J. Mason) is to look for the drum, bugle and banner trophy groups, unmistakable identifiers of this pattern.

Recent research indicates that three potters--in succession-- produced the "Texian Campaigne" pattern. James Beech introduced the pattern in the late 1830's to 1840, prior to closing his operations at the Lion Works (Tunstall) in 1844. Thomas Walker continued operations at the Lion Works until 1852, having acquired Beech's patterns as well as his equipment. Anthony Shaw (operating 1851-56) bought copper plates at the sale of the Walker equipment. The weight of our cup plate is consistent with 1840's earthenware production. "Texian Campaigne" may be the most sought after American historical pattern from the period that follows the early dark and medium blue patterns. It has attracted the attention of collectors as distinguished as Miss Ima Hogg, founder of Bayou Bend. When we are asked why the pattern has attained such high market value, we answer "One reason--Texans."
