Two native wanderers pause beside their camel to stare out at us from the foreground of Ridgway's black transfer "Oriental" pattern salad plate. Nearby we note steps leading up to a domed pavillion while a meandering river leads us to distant moorish buildings and mountains. Ridgway's border of scenic reserves against a field of floral sprays is especially dynamic in black examples.

This version of Ridgway's "Oriental" is not to be confused with the pottery's later reissue of the same pattern. The reissue will be marked "England" under the backstamp and is most commonly found in pale blue or an olive green, often with gilt edge
