Given the smaller than usual size of these stoppered bottles, they were likely intended as dresser accessories--perhaps scent bottles. The decorative reliefs chosen--Apollo and his muses--possess a dignity, however, that would be suitable for a more formal part of the house.The figures appear in pairs, separated by naturalistic leafy trees. The narrow neck is ornamented with Wedgwood's delicate "grass" border, as well as a more conventional band of laurel. The light green jasper dip bottles retain their original lids, decorated with a collar of stiff leaves around the knops.
