Wedgwood uses bands of bright blue grapevines and clusters known as the "Fruiting Vine" border to provide lighthearted contrast to the sophisticated taupe of the glazed drabware body of this cream and sugar.  Note the effect of playfulness achieved with the sprigging, particularly around the knop of the lid and where the vine travels right across the handle fittings of the body.   

Wedgwood referred to the shape of this cream and sugar as their "Egyptian" shape.  Hallmarks of the shape include the crisp right angle of the handle on the creamer and shell fittings at the base of the sugar's tab handles.  The shape is also always typified by the central band, often decorated with sprigging -- as here -- and sometimes left plain.  Whatever the treatment, this band always creates a decorative division of the pieces into an "above" and "below."
