A courtier accompanied by his dogs stops to address a kneeling country maiden in a tableau repeated on each side of this dark blue transfer bowl. A line of printed beading below the scalloped edge finishes the deep inner floral border and exterior scene.

We feel certain the 19th century owner of this humble piece of dark blue pearlware would have been very familiar with the tale depicted. Sadly, we can only speculate. Is this from one of Sir Walter Scott's novels or something as simple as "Cinderella."
