Wedgwood creates an uncommon variation in their glazed cane ware by centering a floral sprig on each face of this faceted fruit bowl. The footed bowl is also distinguished by an unusually glossy glaze.

While Wedgwood offered several combinations of cane ware with colored sprigging, this combination of sky blue against the creamy yellow body color seems to have been the most popular. 

Finding no similar pieces in our references for shape, decoration or glaze, we have used the date range for cane ware given by Robin Reilly in Volume II of his work on Wedgwood.  Comparing this piece to other nineteenth century wares, however, the strong faceted shape is similar to porcelain shapes from the 1830's through the 1860's.  We also associate this combination of sprigs on faceted pieces with wares from the 1840's through the 1860's.  Finally the unique, heavy, glassy glaze may also indicate production from around mid-century.
