Spontaneously painted floral clusters seem so fresh as to fade by tomorrow. Generous gilt decoration around the almond and surrounding rococo shape reserves combines with additional neoclassical detail for dazzling contrast with the rich cobalt ground.

Michael Messenger in Coalport, 1795-1826 illustrates this lozenge shape in a similar cobalt and gilt decorated dessert dish, plate 44, page 97. Both the illustration and this piece have that brio we associate with early Coalport.
