Brownhills Pottery's "Red Riding Hood" series is executed in brown transfer on their ivory body with highlights of bright yellow, blue and a deep rose red. In the scene, a curious Red Riding Hood peers around the curtain of her grandmother's bed to look upon the sly wolf peaking out from granny's bedclothes. He even wears grandmother's deep rose nightcap. Brownhills finishes with the alphabet printed around the flange of the plate.

Most alphabet plate collectors will be excited by an example from this rare series. However, Aesthetic Movement enthusiasts will relate to the domestic details. Granny seems to have been right in sync with the artistic fashion of the day in her choice of bedroom furnishings -- a gothic revival bedstead and cottage style chair and tea table.
